Camp Upton Timeline
Camp Upton was located at the current site of Brookhaven National Lab on Long Island, New York. The museum at the lab is open during the summer. Check the link below for the schedule. The map at right shows a detailed location, just north of the Long Island Expressway, with the entrance on the east side of the William Floyd Parkway. 
          The 77th division was formed at Camp Upton in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, at the current site of Brookhaven National Lab. The camp was built for the 77th and was used again later for WWII. Opening August 25, 1917, the majority of the men left for Europe by the end of April, 1918. Below is a timeline of this period, followed by other info relating to Camp Upton.
07/01/17 (Approx)  Thompson-Starrett Company starts construction on Camp Upton
08/25/17                    Camp opens, Major General J. Franklin Bell commanding (photo 1)          
09/01/17                    77th Officers ordered to report
09/10/17                    First draftees arrive at camp (photos 2 thru 5)          
12/25/17                    Half of the 77th units get leave
01/01/18                    Other half of 77th units get leave
01/15/18 (Approx)  Officers training school started
02/02/18                    308th takes train to NY for 4 day celebration
02/03/18                    308th Regimental Show at NY Hippodrome, NY City raises $8000
                                   Presentation of colors (1st National Army Unit to do it)                    
02/04/18                    308th parade up 8th Ave. & down 5th Ave. in NY City. Papers call them "New York's Own"                     
02/15/18 (Approx)  308th Regimental circus at Camp Upton for 3 days
02/22/18                    77th parade down 5th Ave, NY City (photo 14)          
03/15/18 (Approx)  General Bell releived becuase of  illness, Brigadier General Evan M. Johnson takes command of 77th          
03/27/18                    First troops leave camp
04/06/18                    308th takes dawn train to Long Island City, ferry to North River Pier, departs for Europe (photo 15)
04/21/18                    304th, 306th and 152 Headquarters departs for NY
04/23/18 (Approx)  305th, 302nd departs for NY and Europe
04/24/18                    304th, 306th and 152 Headquarters depart NY Harbor or Europe
